Fat is broken down into ketone bodies in the process of beta oxidation. These are highly acidic and cannot be broken down quick enough in starving people. This can cause neurological symptoms like lethargy, irritability and in extreme cases coma and death. This process takes much longer, so proteins get broken down first.
Proteins are the most metabolically active tissues and when you lose them your BMR goes down. Your BMR (basal metabolic rate) determines how much energy your body uses doing daily tasks. When you lose muscle you use less energy. Its your body%26#039;s way of conserving energy.
You wont starve to death in 5 days, starving to death takes much longer. But you will have the symptoms I have described, along with others like stunted growth.
The reason when people are so against it is that it is self inflicted for the purpose of weight loss. I guess people feel that our society is wrong when people willingly torture themselves in the pursuit of unrealistic body image goals. Our parents generation fought for equality for women and that women were not sexual objects, with empty heads and pretty faces, women could work and think and be a valuable person. And now we are willingly giving up those rights.
Maybe thats all women are.
Enjoy your diet.
There are better ways to lose weight is the message i%26#039;m getting from everyones responses. I agree. You sound really frustrated about your diet and weight. If you are concerned consult a doctor and get a referral to a dietitian. They are the experts in food and food behaviors. And as they have a 4 year university science degree in nutrition they only give scientifically founded advice.
And you are exactly right for the caloric intake being different for everybody, it is. It depends on age, height, gender, activity level and illnesses.
Fad diets (like south beach), are a form of starvation, right again. But this doesn%26#039;t make them any better for you or any more effective. They are all silly, short term and ineffective. I would not recommend cutting out any food, including junk. If you eat chocolate like its the last time you are ever going to eat it, you are going to stuff yourself. If you eat some knowing you can have it again tomorrow, you will only have a few squares.
One thing i disagree with is that starch has a lot of calories. Starch which is a form of carbohydrate. Carbohydrate contains 16kJ (3.8cal) per gram. Fat contains 37kJ (8.8cal) per gram. Protein contains 17kJ (4cal). Alcohol contains 29kJ (7cal).
Carbs are ok. Recognize low carb diets as a fad along with south beach. 17% 1 Vote
Gastric bypass forces your body to take in less food (which is not fasting), it forces your body to do this over a long period of time (years), and it forces you to eat small portions throughout the day which is the reason it works.
The diet you are starting is not fasting but it will non the less have the same results as described above. If you want a diet to be effective in the short run (less than years) you need to eat tinny meals throughout the day and get plenty of exercise everday. 17% 1 Vote
3-No. Gastric bypass is an invasive surgery where the doctor actually removes (or pinches off) part of your stomach making it smaller, so you eat less.
4-Yes they do, but they are given the Nutrients they need in that liquid diet.
As to the diffrence, to use fasting as a spiritual aid is acceptable because free religon is protected by law, but for weight loss it is a scientificly unhealthy way to acomplish it. 0% 0 Votes
