In order to have butterflies you have to have caterpillars. There is one book that is the ONLY comprehensive book on caterpillars so far written, the butterflies they turn into , and the host plants for both butterflies and caterpillars. It is simply Caterpillars of Eastern North America. I got a copy from Amazon.com but I have also seen it at Borders books. A lot of butterflies are not only native to the East coast but throughout North America, so this book actually is good through the whole country. If you are serious about butterfly gardening, this is one book you need. There is also another very small book called %26quot;Painted Ladies%26quot;, and small as it is, it is packed with good butterfly information.
I have had a butterfly garden for years, and though I had lots of butterflies, I knew little about their caterpillars and what they needed to thrive. This book has been a gold mine.
Some plants: Dutchman%26#039;s pipe vine for Pipe Vine Swallowtail caterpillar food
Milkweed for Monarchs and giant Fritillarias, also other butterflies feed on the flower nectar.
Violets, for Fritillaria caterpillars. If there are no violets for the caterpillars to eat when they hatch out, they will die.
Carrot family plants for black swallowtails: parsley, dill, carrots, queen anne%26#039;s lace, fennel
cabbage plant family for white cabbage butterfly caterpillars.
Butterfly bush, spirea, lunaria, any flower with a wide base for butterflies to land for nectar.
Lunaria (money plant) that blooms early in the spring is always alive with dozens of huge butterflies of all kinds in my garden, plus hundreds of small ones. They all seem to like it. I plant it in huge swaths at the edge of my woods.
There are many, many more--too many to list.
