Purchasing a Domain Name on Yahoo?

Purchasing a Domain Name on Yahoo? I%26#039;m about to buy a domain name from yahoo..1.99 for the first year, I thought it was a bargain. However, after I purchase the domain name, can I choose any web server to host my site? I.e. DreamHost, Blue Host or even sites such as GoDaddy? I%26#039;ve been trying to read up and have seen people ask about transfering their domain name, what is that and for what? And why can%26#039;t you %26quot;own%26quot; your domain name? Why do you have to pay a yearly fee?

Yes, I%26#039;m new at this and trying to learn. I just want to start my own personal website with a blog..and yes I%26#039;m willing to bother myself to do this and no I do not want a free website builder or a free blog site. Thanks for hosting my web site.
I haven%26#039;t really had much problems with them and I%26#039;ve had them for like 4 years now.
You can buy your domain name from one place and host it at another site, that%26#039;s where the transferring comes in. You can host it where ever you like,that%26#039;s up to you. check around at prices. I tend to get a lot of hits so I needed something with a lot of bandwidth.
If you purchase your domain name, you DO own it.it%26#039;s yours for the length of time you paid for it.
The yearly fee is paid to the hosting provider because you are hosting/uploading and storing your files on %26#039;their%26#039; computer/hard drives.
